Advancing Structural Health Monitoring: WILLOW at EWSHM 2026

From 7 to 10 July 2026, WILLOW research was presented at the 12th European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring (EWSHM 2026) in Toulouse, France. The event brought together leading researchers and industry professionals to discuss the latest advances in structural health monitoring technologies and their applications across different sectors.

Representing the WILLOW project, researchers from Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) contributed with two presentations addressing key challenges in offshore wind asset monitoring, reliability assessment and data-driven decision-making.

Ahmed Mujtaba presented “Fatigue Iso-Life Curves for Quantifying Uncertainty under Varying Environmental and Operational Conditions”. The research explored new approaches to understanding and quantifying uncertainty in fatigue life assessment, supporting more reliable lifetime predictions for offshore wind structures operating under changing environmental and operational conditions.

A second contribution was presented by Jan Van Rompaey, entitled “Transfer Learning in Graph Neural Networks with Real-World Offshore Wind Farm Data”. The work examined how advanced machine learning techniques can leverage data from real offshore wind farms to improve structural health monitoring methodologies and enhance the scalability of data-driven solutions.

Together, these contributions demonstrated how advanced analytical methods and artificial intelligence can support more effective monitoring and assessment of offshore wind assets. By improving the understanding of structural behaviour and making better use of operational data, the research contributes to WILLOW’s objective of extending asset lifetime, enhancing reliability and supporting more efficient offshore wind operations.

The participation of VUB at EWSHM 2026 highlights the project’s continued commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and developing innovative solutions for the future of offshore wind energy.
